Education Requirement


In order to meet the education requirement you must be able to prove that you have completed a course of study comparable to at least four years full-time (or part-time equivalent) higher education (university) level study in Australia, that results in a qualification/s. (for instance a 4 year teaching degree or a 3 year bachelors degree + a one year full time initial teacher education qualification)

Professional Requirement – Early Childhood Teacher


You must have an initial teacher education qualification relevant to the early childhood (pre-primary school) teacher occupation of at least one year full-time study (or part time equivalent) at the higher education (university) level. The qualification must include a minimum of 45 days of supervised teaching practice with students across the ages Birth to 8 years in education programs prior to and in the early years of primary school.

The professional qualification/s must be assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian bachelor degree or higher.

Supervised Teaching Practice

Supervised teaching practice is the compulsory component of an initial teacher education program during which time a student teacher is on a school placement and engaged in the teaching and learning process with school students. This teaching practice is under the supervision of a qualified teacher and university education staff and is formally assessed. A minimum of 45 days of supervised teaching practice with the age range of the students relevant to your nominated occupation is required. University based teaching practice activities undertaken with fellow students and university staff will not be considered.

Professional Requirement – Secondary School Teacher


An initial teacher education qualification relevant to the secondary school teacher occupation of at least one year full-time study (or part time equivalent) at the higher education (university) level. The qualification must include a minimum of 45 days of supervised teaching practice with students across the age range of 13 - 18 years in a secondary school setting.

The professional qualification/s must be assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian bachelor degree or higher.

Supervised Teaching Practice

Supervised teaching practice is the compulsory component of an initial teacher education program during which time a student teacher is on a school placement and engaged in the teaching and learning process with school students. This teaching practice is under the supervision of a qualified teacher and university education staff and is formally assessed. A minimum of 45 days of supervised teaching practice with the age range of the students relevant to your nominated occupation is required. University based teaching practice activities undertaken with fellow students and university staff will not be considered.

 Professional Requirement – Special Needs Teacher


(i) an initial teacher education qualification of at least one year full-time study (or part-time equivalent) at the higher education (university) level that includes a minimum of 45 days of supervised teaching practice with students in a school setting, and a formal post graduate qualification in special needs of at least one year in duration (full-time or part-time equivalent) at the higher education (university) level.

NOTE - Applicants relying on a postgraduate special needs qualification to, in-part, meet the professional criterion must have completed a minimum of 45 days of supervised teaching practice in a school setting as part of their initial teacher education qualification to meet the professional assessment criteria. or

(ii)     an undergraduate initial teacher education qualification with a specialisation in special needs of at least one year full-time study (or part-time equivalent), at the higher education (university) level that includes a minimum of 45 days of supervised teaching practice with students within a special needs setting.

The professional qualification/s must be assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian bachelor degree or higher.

Supervised Teaching Practice

Supervised teaching practice is the compulsory component of an initial teacher education program during which time a student teacher is on a school placement and engaged in the teaching and learning process with school students. This teaching practice is under the supervision of a qualified teacher and university education staff and is formally assessed. A minimum of 45 days of supervised teaching practice with the type of the students relevant to your nominated occupation is required. University based teaching practice activities undertaken with fellow students and university staff will not be considered.

Professional Requirement – Teacher of the Sight Impaired


You must have:

(i)   an initial teacher education qualification of at least one year full-time study (or part-time equivalent) at the higher education (university) level that includes a minimum of 45 days of supervised teaching practice with students in a school setting, and a formal post graduate qualification in special education of at least one year in duration (full-time or part-time equivalent) that includes a minimum of 30 days of supervised teaching practice with students with a sight impairment. or

(ii) an undergraduate initial teacher education qualification with a specialisation in special education of at least one year full-time study (or part-time equivalent), at the higher education (university) level that includes a minimum of 45 days of supervised teaching practice with students in a school setting, with students with a sight impairment.

The professional qualification/s must be assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian bachelor degree or higher.

Supervised Teaching Practice

Supervised teaching practice is the compulsory component of an initial teacher education program during which time a student teacher is on a school placement and engaged in the teaching and learning process with school students. This teaching practice is under the supervision of a qualified teacher and university education staff and is formally assessed. A minimum of 45 days of supervised teaching practice with the type of students relevant to your nominated occupation is required. University based teaching practice activities undertaken with fellow students and university staff will not be considered.

Professional Requirement – Teacher of the Hearing Impaired


You must have:

(i)   an initial teacher education qualification of at least one year full-time study (or part-time equivalent) at the higher education (university) level that includes a minimum of 45 days of supervised teaching practice with students in a school setting, and a formal post graduate qualification in special education of at least one year in duration (full-time or part-time equivalent) that includes a minimum of 30 days of supervised teaching practice with students with a hearing impairment. or

(ii) an undergraduate initial teacher education qualification with a specialisation in special education of at least one year full-time study (or part-time equivalent), at the higher education (university) level that includes a minimum of 45 days of supervised teaching practice with students in a school setting, with students with a hearing impairment.

The professional qualification/s must be assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian bachelor degree or higher.

Supervised Teaching Practice

Supervised teaching practice is the compulsory component of an initial teacher education program during which time a student teacher is on a school placement and engaged in the teaching and learning process with school students. This teaching practice is under the supervision of a qualified teacher and university education staff and is formally assessed. A minimum of 45 days of supervised teaching practice with the type of students relevant to your nominated occupation is required. University based teaching practice activities undertaken with fellow students and university staff will not be considered.

Professional Requirement – Special Education Teacher


You must have:

(i) an initial teacher education qualification of at least one year full-time study (or part-time equivalent) at the higher education (university) level that includes a minimum of 45 days of supervised teaching practice with students in a school setting, and a formal post graduate qualification in special education of at least one year in duration (full-time or part-time equivalent) at the higher education (university) level.

The professional qualification/s must be assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian bachelor degree or higher.

This teaching practice is under the supervision of a qualified teacher and university education staff and is formally assessed. Professional Requirement - Middle School Teacher


An initial teacher education qualification relevant to the nominated occupation of at least one year full-time study (or part time equivalent) at the higher education (university) level. The qualification must include a minimum of 45 days of supervised teaching practice with students across the age range of 10 - 15 years in a middle school setting.

Supervised teaching practice may be completed in a separate middle school or by teaching students in both upper primary and lower secondary schools, with a minimum of 10 days teaching upper primary aged students (10 – 12 years) and a minimum of 10 days teaching lower secondary school aged students (13 – 15 years).

The professional qualification/s must be assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian bachelor degree or higher.

Supervised Teaching Practice

Supervised teaching practice is the compulsory component of an initial teacher education program during which time a student teacher is on a school placement and engaged in the teaching and learning process with school students. This teaching practice is under the supervision of a qualified teacher and university education staff and is formally assessed. A minimum of 45 days of supervised teaching practice with the age range of the students relevant to your nominated occupation is required. University based teaching practice activities undertaken with fellow students and university staff will not be considered.

English Language Requirement


In order to attain a successful skills assessment, one of the criteria is that you meet the English Language requirement by one of the following

  • Providing an Academic version of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Test Report Form (TRF) that shows a score of at least 7.0 for both Reading and Writing; and a score of at least 8.0 for both Speaking and Listening. The IELTS test scores must appear on a single IELTS TRF and be the result of a test undertaken during the 24 month period prior to submitting an application. Or

  • That you have completed at least four full years of study in higher education (university) in Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States of America. This study must have resulted in award of 2 qualification(s) comparable to the educational level of an Australian bachelor degree or higher and must include a recognised initial teacher education qualification.

Working Holiday Visa Eligibility


The Australian Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417) is for young people who want to holiday and work in Australia for up to a year. In some cases you may be able to apply for a second year. To get a correct assessment of your eligibility, please answer ALL questions in this section.
