Doctors General Skilled Migration Eligibility Check

Getting Started

The Skillselect Visa program is for people who would like to migrate to Australia as Permanent Residents and includes the Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189), Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190) and Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491). To be eligible, you must:

Be under 45 years of age;
Successfully gain general registration, conditional specialist registration or specialist registration;
Score at least 60 points on the Points Test.

Core Eligibility Requirements

Age – The General Skilled Migration program is for applicants who are under 45 years of age. Points are allocated based on age brackets as shown below

English Language Ability – is an important element in your SkillSelect points calculation. The ratings are Competent, Proficient and Superior please review these ratings before making a selection. To claim points for your English Language ability, you must take an english test even if you are a native english speaker.

Qualification – is also an important element in your SkillSelect points calculation. Please select your highest qualification, even if it is not relevant to your current occupation.

Specialist Education Qualification

If you hold a a Doctorate or Masters degree by research from an Australian educational institution that included at least 2 academic years of full time study in one of the fields listed below, then you may be eligible for additional points.

Choosing Your Visa

The first thing you will need to know is what the ANZSCO code is for your occupation. You can choose from the alphabetical list below. If you are not sure about your occupation – for instance are you a “Specialist Physician (General Medicine)” or a “Specialist Physician (nec)”, the simplest way is to google “ANZSCO” and your occupation. You can then read the details of the occupations and make sure what you do matches that occupation.

The General Skilled Migration program comprises 3 visas, the Skilled Independent visa (Subclass 189), Skilled Nominated visa (Subclass 190) and Skilled Work Regional Migration (Subclass 491).
If you are eligible and get enough points, the 189 is the simplest, as you can apply independently. The 190 visa requires nomination by a State or Territory. Each State/Territory has its own rules and requirements. The advantage is that you get an additional 5 points for nomination. The 491 visa also requires State or Territory Nomination (or nomination by an eligible relative) and this can give you an extra 10 points.

In order to be eligible for the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) (Subclass 491) Visa you need to be nominated by an Australian State or Territory government agency, which means that you must meet the requirements of the particular state or territory where you wish to live -AND- make a successful application for Nomination to that State/Territory -OR- be nominated by an eligible relative living in a designated area (see the requirements on the “Sponsors” Tab on the DHA 491 page HERE .

The Government of Queensland closed the Subclass 190 nominatoin program as of the 26th November 2019. You can check if the program has subsequently re-opened HERE.

NSW 190 Nomination

A new selection and invitation process for the NSW nomination program was introduced in February 2015. Under this process, prospective candidates for NSW nomination are selected from SkillSelect, the DIBP’s online registration system for skilled workers. The top-ranking candidates are invited to apply for NSW nomination. At a minimum your occupation must appear on the NSW Priority Skilled Occupations List which can be found HERE. Some occupations on the NSW 190 Priority Occupation List are now subject to an additional requirement for nomination by NSW. The additional requirement for these occupations is to be living in NSW, and to have been employed in NSW for at least one year, in the nominated occupation.

Government of South Australia only nominates Subclass 190 visa applicants in special circumstances. Your occupation must be on their State Nominated Occupations List HERE and you must meet certain other conditions in Section 3.5 HERE.
