For an International Medical Graduate (IMG) to work in Australia as a medical practitioner there are usually three key steps:
- Obtain a job offer from an Australian business (public hospital, private hospital, GP practice, private clinic etc)
- Obtain registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) / Australian Medical Board (AMB)
- Obtain a work visa*
*A high percentage of doctors enter Australia on a 482 temporary work visa or a 407 training visa. We consider the 482 visa to be the better option for a wide variety of reasons.
Medical practitioners living overseas who are successful in gaining registration as a specialist (including conditional specialist registration), may have access permanent residence pathways.
