Perth City to Become “Regional” on 16th November 2019

Awesome News International Students and Migrants

Perth is arguably the most liveable city in Australia!

Perth is clean, it’s green and the cost of living, when you factor in house prices and rentals, is significantly lower than the major Australian cities. What’s more, Perth has some of the best beaches in the world on its doorstep and a huge number of green open spaces for everyone to enjoy. The jewel in Perth’s crown is Kings Park, one of the world’s largest and most beautiful inner city parks … and it’s free! There are wonderful children’s playgrounds financed by the WA Lotteries Commission, free barbeques for all to use, spectacular walks amongst towering eucalypts and lots of bicycle trails. Why on earth would you live anywhere else?

And Perth is about to become an even more attractive destination for international students – Perth is about to be reinstated as a regional city, which will benefit the whole community. Perth’s regional status will come into effect on 16 November 2019.

Finance Minister Mathias Cormann said the State and Federal Government continued to work together to ensure that Australia’s migration system meets the needs of our cities and regions.

“As a regional city, Perth will be an option for international students who want to study here, as they will now be eligible for an additional year in Australia on a post-study work visa,” Minister Cormann said.

“That additional year of post-study work by international students who choose Perth will not only benefit students with work experience, income, and post-study financial stability, but also help drive stronger economic growth.”

Premier Mark McGowan said “Attracting more international students will help diversify and grow the State’s economy and also create employment opportunities for Western Australians.”

WA Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery said WA’s international education sector currently supports 14,600 full-time jobs.

“Not only do international students enrich the social vibrancy and cultural fabric of our communities, their presence attracts thousands of visiting friends and relatives from overseas,” Ms Ellery said.

So what does this all actually mean?

For international students it means:
  • The opportunity to gain a 3 years post study work visa (Subclass 485 – Temporary Graduate visa)
  • Extra points for studying in a regional area
  • Access to a much wider range of skilled visa options when considering pathways to permanent residence
  • Access to a much wider range of skilled occupations for the Subclass 491 and 494 visas. These are the two new skilled regional provisional visas that commence on 16th November 2019.  We will cover these new visas in a separate blog and will explain how the pathway to PR works.
