Young people from eligible countries who are interested in having an extended holiday supplemented by short-term employment in Australia can apply for a Working Holiday visa.
If you meet the above mentioned common criteria and wish to apply for a Working Holiday visa then please refer to the following before deciding which working holiday visa is most appropriate for you:
Criteria specific for “First Working Holiday visa”:
If you are applying Working Holiday visa for the first time then:
- You must be outside Australia at the time of your visa application.
- You must also be outside Australia at the time of decision of your visa application.
- You cannot be accompanied by dependent child.
- Pregnant Working Holiday applicant/s will have to provide additional evidence to satisfy the visa officer that the applicant will not give birth to a child in Australia. If the holder of working holiday visa gives birth to a child in Australia then the visa could be cancelled.
- Must be a genuine visitor – intending to spend a holiday in Australia.
- Must have sufficient money to purchase a return ticket to the country where the applicant will be going after leaving Australia.
- Must have sufficient funds for personal support (AUD 5000).
Criteria specific for “Second Working Holiday visa”:
If you are applying Working Holiday visa for the second time then:
- If you were outside Australia when the application was made, then you must be outside Australia when the visa is granted.
- If you were in Australia when the application was made, then you must be in Australia when the visa is granted.
- Must have performed specified work in regional Australia, full-time or equivalent, for 3 months (88 days) as the holder of first Working Holiday visa.
- Specified work must have been paid and appropriately remunerated.
- A dependent child cannot accompany you.
- Pregnant Working Holiday applicant/s will have to provide additional evidence to satisfy the visa officer that the applicant will not give birth to a child in Australia. If the holder of working holiday visa gives birth to a child in Australia then the visa could be cancelled.
- Must be a genuine visitor – intending to spend a holiday in Australia.
- Must have sufficient money to purchase a return ticket to the country where the applicant will be going after leaving Australia.
- If applied from outside Australia, the applicant must have sufficient funds for personal support (AUD 5000).
Criteria specific for “third Working Holiday visa” (Available from January 2020):
If you are looking to apply a Working Holiday Visa for the third time then:
- If you were outside Australia when the application was made, then you must be outside Australia when the visa is granted.
- If you were in Australia when the application was made, then you must be in Australia when the visa is granted.
- Must have performed specified work in regional Australia, full-time or equivalent, for 6 months as the holder of second Working Holiday visa or in certain circumstances on a bridging visa from 01 July 2019 onwards.
- Specified work must have been paid and appropriately remunerated.
- A dependent child cannot accompany you.
- Pregnant Working Holiday applicant/s will have to provide additional evidence to satisfy the visa officer that the applicant will not give birth to a child in Australia. If the holder of working holiday visa gives birth to a child in Australia then the visa could be cancelled.
- Must be a genuine visitor – intending to spend a holiday in Australia.
- Must have sufficient money to purchase a return ticket to the country where the applicant will be going after leaving Australia.
- If applied from outside Australia, then applicant must have sufficient funds for personal support (AUD 5000).
Mandatory Conditions:
As the holder of a working holiday visa:
- You cannot work more than 6 months for the same Australian employer. (Some exceptions apply)
- You cannot study for more than 4 months in Australia.
Working holiday visa period:
- For applicants outside Australia:
- Travel to Australia within 12 months from the date of visa grant.
- Remain in Australia for 12 months from their date of first entry into Australia on that working holiday visa.
- Leave and re-enter Australia on multiple occasions during the 12 months from first entry.
- For applicants inside Australia:
- Remain in Australia for 12 months from the date of visa grant.
- Leave and re-enter Australia on multiple occasions during the 12 months from the date of visa grant.
- If applicant held the first working holiday visa at the time when they applied for the second working holiday visa, then the second working holiday visa, if granted, will allow the applicant to stay in, leave and re-enter Australia for a period of 24 months from the date of their first entry into Australia as the holder of the first working holiday visa.
